You light a soy candle, enjoy it for a few days, and then notice something: a white, slightly crystalline film creeping across the surface of the wax. Your first thought might be that something's gone wrong, that the candle is old, damaged, or poorly made.

It's actually the opposite. That film is called frosting, and it's one of the clearest signs you're holding a candle made with real, natural soy wax. Here's what it is, why it happens, and why at Mimi & August we see it as a feature, not a flaw.

What Is Soy Wax Frosting?

Frosting is the white, powdery, or crystalline layer that forms on the surface and sides of a soy candle as it cools and ages. It can look like a dusting of frost, a faint marbled pattern, or fine white crystals. Most visible on candles with darker dyes, though it happens in all soy wax.

It's purely cosmetic. Frosting has zero effect on how your candle burns, how it smells, or how long it lasts. A frosted candle performs exactly the same as a perfectly smooth one.

Why Does Frosting Happen?

Soy wax is a natural, plant-based material made from soybeans. Like many natural materials, it wants to return to its most stable form as it cools and for soy wax, that means forming tiny crystals.

This is a process called crystallization. As the melted wax cools and solidifies, the soy molecules arrange themselves into a crystalline structure. When some of those crystals form right at the surface, you see them as frosting. It's the wax doing exactly what natural soy wax is supposed to do.

Several everyday factors can make frosting more or less visible: changes in room temperature, exposure to light, the natural dyes used, and simply the passage of time. A candle that looked perfectly smooth when you bought it may develop frosting after a few weeks on a shelf and that's completely normal.

The Key Point: Frosting Is a Sign of Purity

Here's what most people don't realize: frosting is one of the most recognizable signs of natural soy wax.

Paraffin candles don't frost. Many "soy blend" candles which mix soy with paraffin or synthetic additives frost far less, if at all, because those additives suppress the natural crystallization. The additives create a flawlessly smooth, uniform surface that stays that way forever.

So when you see frosting, you're seeing proof that there's nothing hiding in the wax. No paraffin, no hardeners, no synthetic stabilizers added purely for the sake of appearance. Just natural soy.

At Mimi & August, every candle is hand-poured in our South Shore of Montreal workshop with 100% natural soy wax. No blends, no fillers. We could add stabilizers to eliminate frosting entirely. We choose not to, because we'd rather keep the wax pure than make it look artificially perfect.

Does Frosting Affect the Candle?

No and this is the most important thing to take away. Frosting affects only the appearance of the wax. It has no impact on:

  • Burn quality — a frosted candle burns just as cleanly and evenly.
  • Scent throw — fragrance releases exactly the same way.
  • Burn time — you'll get the full life out of the candle.
  • Safety — frosting is completely harmless.

Once you light the candle, the melt pool dissolves the surface frosting anyway. It may reappear as the wax cools and resolidifies between burns and again, that's simply natural soy being natural soy.

Can You Reduce Frosting at Home?

You can't prevent frosting entirely with a natural soy candle and honestly, we'd encourage you not to try. But if you'd like to keep your candle looking as smooth as possible, a few simple habits help:

  • Keep it out of direct sunlight. UV exposure accelerates frosting and can also affect the colour and scent.
  • Store it at a stable room temperature. Big temperature swings encourage the wax to recrystallize.
  • Use the lid or dust cover between burns. It protects the surface and keeps the wax clean.

That said, frosting will likely still appear over time and that's a good thing. It's the wax telling you it's the real deal.

Embracing the Natural Look

There's a quiet beauty in a material that behaves naturally. Frosting is part of the character of a real soy candle —à the same way a slub in linen or a knot in solid wood tells you something honest about what you're holding.

It's also part of the larger philosophy behind everything we make. Our candles come in reusable ceramic cups, designed by Camille Forcherio, meant to be refilled and kept long after the wax is gone. Natural materials, made thoughtfully, allowed to be what they are. Frosting fits right into that.
